Creating New Holiday Traditions with Hallmark #NorthpoleFun!

One of my favorite parts of having a family of my own is creating traditions together.  Each year at Christmastime, we love to look through cookbooks and try new cookie recipes--our favorite so far has been the Reese's Chewy Chocolate Cookie!  We have combined some of our growing up traditions: my family celebrates on Christmas Eve and Ricky's family hung candy canes on the tree with new ideas like Elf on the Shelf (ughhh!).

After our Christmas pictures last week, we were doing a little holiday shopping at Walmart and the girls noticed the Northpole collection.  Before buying anything, I wanted them to check out all of the toys and products available to see what they gravitated towards.

The biggest hit was the Northpole Communicator which you can call Santa and his elves once a day.  They have a super cool cookie cutter wheel (why didn't I think of that?!), soft plush polar bears, "snowballs" you can throw, a Dance Like An Elf microphone which calls out dance moves and much, much more.  Everything is located by the card section in your local Walmart store...also sometimes by the gift wrapping section.  Everything is based off of the new Hallmark movie Northpole and the DVD is also available in stores!  It stars Kelly from Saved By the Bell, so I'm already sold.

I wanted to surprise the girls with the Northpole Communicator, so I waited a few days until our next trip to Walmart.  Gabby asked to look at the section again and when I told her we were buying the toy, her face just lit up.  Definitely a priceless moment!  When the twins came home from school, I told them there was a surprise waiting for them.  The minute Olivia saw the big microphone, she screamed with joy...she's a bit dramatic.  Of course, we had to call Santa right after dinner.

The best part about the Northpole Communicator is that it can be used again year after year.  At the base, by the battery pack is a cartridge which you set the date and time.  You can buy new cartridges every season so every call to the North Pole is unique!  Heads up: you can only call the North Pole once a day, so make sure your family is all gathered around.  We like to keep ours up high so little fingers don't attempt to play with it all day long (*cough* Gabby).  Our new tradition is to "dial in" every night after showers and stories.  You never know who you'll talk to--either Santa, an elf or someone else!  Santa told the girls they were on the good list last night and they've been talking about it non-stop!

My favorite find was the Santa is Coming to Michigan book for only $8.99!  It is a new favorite to add to our holiday book basket.  I love how they really highlight all parts of Michigan.  The girls LOVE to hear their town Grand Rapids listed, although they are sure to point out that we don't have a chimney like they mention.

There are many other gifts for everyone that I'm eyeing from the Northpole Collection,  They have cute mugs (think teachers!), sprinkle bells for cookies, books, ornaments and more! Make sure to check out the whole aisle of fun at Walmart before products run out! I can't wait to see the movie, which ares on the Hallmark Channel all season long.

Have you started any new traditions this year?

Mmmm Monday: Cranberry Hootycreeks

December 10, 2012

I love this time of the year because I dust off my apron and experiment with baking.  It's especially fun this year now that I can use one of our wedding gifts, our Kitchen Aid (thanks Mom and Dad!).  It really does save a lot of time and energy when you have a nice mixer.   Our old hand mixer used to smoke on batch two or three of cookies...probably should throw that away.

This year I was a part of a Cookie Swap with other bloggers. After baking a batch of cookies, you ship a dozen off to 3 different people. It's like a secret Santa with cookies...the best kind! Also, donations are made to Cookies for Kids' Cancer and Oxo will match $100,000! What a tasty way to help those in need this holiday season!

A few years ago, I made cookie jars for gifts and this was by far our favorite variety.  It's nice to step away from plain old (but delicious!) sugar cookies.  I was going to make something with peppermint, but this recipe just kept popping into my head.

I'm sure not too many people have tried a hootycreek, so I thought I would share!  The only hootie I've heard of is of the blowfish variety...don't lie, you loved them too.

Cranberry Hootycreeks
(Adapted from this jar cookie recipe)

Ingredients
  • 2 1/4 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 2/3 cup sugar
  • 2/3 cup brown sugar (packed)
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla (I always add extra for cookies)
  • 1 cup oatmeal
  • 1 cup white chocolate chips
  • 1 cup pecans
  • 1 cup Craisins
Directions
  1. Preheat oven to 350.  Line cookie sheets with parchment paper (or simply spray with Pam).
  2. Combine flour, soda and salt in a medium bowl and set aside.
  3. Cream butter and sugars with a mixer.  Add eggs and vanilla.
  4. Mix in dry ingredients, slowly.  Next add oatmeal and pecans.  Finish up with Craisins and chips.
  5. Drop onto cookie sheets and cook for 8-10 minutes, or until done.  (Mine tend to take 11-12 in our new oven).
ENJOY!

Hopefully the lucky recipients of these cookies have received their cookie box.  They are:

Deal alert! Free holiday photo shoot!

November 01, 2012

[I thought I would re-post this to remind everyone now that it's November!]

It's that time of year again, believe it or not!  Christmas shopping season!  Fa la la lala!

When I think of Christmas shopping, I think of Christmas Vacation.  Definitely one of my top 5 favorite movies EVER.  Home Alone is up there too.  Plains, Trains and Automobiles.  Christmas Story.  Plus all of the decorations and family fun.  I love the holidays!

Every year, I have a great elaborate plan to do my shopping early and get my cards done before December 20th.  Last year, we barely got cards out!

This is what our holiday photo shoot looked like:
This will be our classic Christmas photo...we had a canvas made!

This year, I am determined to get myself in line.  Step one: get a family photo.  I would like us ALL to be included this year.  (I will admit, I am dreading this...).

The minute I got this email, I made an appointment!
See my favorite word? FREE.
JCP is offering a free family photo all of November!  No sitting fee, nada!  You get an 8x10 and (most importantly) a digital copy sent to you!

Once you get your photo taken, you can go to Vistaprint or Shutterfly to get some cheap cards made.  I'll keep you posted on any deals I see.

Yay for freebies!  Anyone else see any holiday deals yet?

We wish you a Merry Christmas!

December 23, 2011

This holiday season has flown by, don't you think?  I am trying to enjoy every moment now that the girls are at prime Santa age (almost 3!), but I am exhausted!  Little Gabby is a bit young still, but she loves the Christmas lights!

Usually I am organized about the gift shopping, but I am a mess.  What is it about this year?  Is there such thing as post-pregnancy brain?

We completely forgot to get pictures for cards until the last minute and this is what happened:
Don't you love the creepy photographer hand?
Fortunately, we were able to get 4 good pics, but it was a rough shoot!

All chaos aside, I am very excited for the next two days.  I cannot wait to see the girls' faces Christmas Day and to spend time with my family on Christmas Eve (we are still crossing our fingers that Ricky doesn't have to work).  I hope everyone can remember what the season is about.  For a moment, I felt like a Grinch but I was able to snap out of it.

I wish you and yours an amazing holiday season.  I hope you enjoy all of the little moments and make many new memories!

xoxo!
